ART – The Longest Journey (part2)

Piotr Kolanko Zawód Malarz Moonlight 100x80 mixed media 2020

I think that the gates to openness, which stand on the road to self development, will sooner or later presnt themselves to those who follow the road. Of course, there is a chance that one will not notice them and will carry on walk around blindly with their narrow horizont. This is the God’s joke on life. You don’t have to do anything, but you can achieve a lot.

Coming back to the question of art, my paintings are a collection of roads which by crossing one another are destined to create what seems to be pure chaos in its primal phase, just to form harmony later on, despite its own asymetry. I’m fascinated by sustainable discharge of the tension. Not only composition – wise. The same elements of composition, when given a certain tune, produce different sounds, draw attention differently, each of these creative acts is genuine and can pretend to universality.

Following the trace of associations with travelling,  distant parts of the world can be visited in various ways. There are places which you know only slightly and those to which you pay significantly more attention. Myself, I much prefer the second way of discovering places. I like to feel the smell of the big city streets, experience the pace of people’s lives , get to know their culture and customs, and, when in the nature, I like to contemplate the silence, slow down. Sometimes in your creative proces you end up in places, which require more attention or, in order to satisfy your curiosity, you will need a set of tools, context, story, its inhabitants in the form of shapes and their configurations on canvas. More and more often I am becoming an admirer of building enviroments: drawing leads to a graphics, a graphics leads to painting, painting leads to sculpture. If I were a musician, probably I would end up interpreting that world with sounds. I am not a musician, but I think about my art in the categories of rythm and sound, I think I play with tones. When I get the right tone, I consider my piece done. Of course, as every journey, it is finished only seemingly. In reality, one can work on one painting for the whole life, which practically is not very sensible. To tell the truth, I pity all those beatiful places which we get to know on your way to your destiny – each of them deserves to be remembered, each of them is different. While writing the story of your life and ending it in distant parts of the galaxy, it is inappropriate to leave out the beginnings of life on Earth. Displaying your road is also a map for those who will come after you. It is your input in solving formal and ideological questions. I paint, or more specifically, I create, to understand myself. Creating is the effect, not the reason. The reason is my will to understand my own self, answer basic questions on human existence and its purpose. Art itself is sort of a registry of anxieties and unrest of the soul connected with the state of death and, at the same time, a collection of love and fascinations of how life manifests itself. If the reason to create art is fame, recognition or any other form of attracting attention – it will most definitely not stand the test of time. In the end, when we look at the world’s history, there are only a few names which are remembered, read or looked at – I respect them all for their efforts to solve the mystery of existence.

My painting should be thought of as a colllection. Despite the fact that I always try to create an autonomous piece, it is a part of a bigger proccess. Transformation, change, continuous proccess of creation, capturing a moment in time, closure, movement, infinity, 0, relativism, inability to reach common, objective reality. These are a few of the traces which can be used in order to understand what I do. On the formal level I am interested in trace and symbol. I am interested in the moment in which a set of traces become a symbol, or a symbol of what is the trace’s character? A gesture, tonation, key, trace, symbols. I don’t mean to create them in a given convention, but the convention creates itself. Very often, while writing about this, I talk about intuition and drive, as well as getting rid of intellectualization of the piece’s formula. In fact, however, these systems are connected, a part of the piece is created ”in the background” while a part of it is subjected to intellectualization and evaluation. This way of painting leads directly to self – discovery. As an effect, an original language is created, which expresses everything that’s on my mind at the moment. I avoid explicitness, when I create a symbol, I shape it, deconstuct it, in order to make it ambiguous, which will allow the recipent to be free in the journey through their own system of meanings. Is it impossible to avoid the thesis that in my painting I am a traditionalist to a certain level and as a painter I solve purely painting-related problems. The language of abstraction of the above-mentioned variables is the only adequate field of experience.
